The Terrestrial Gospel of Kazantzakis:

Inspiration for Saving the Earth

“Good is this earth, it suits us!”

 Thanasis Maskaleris

 Abstract

The terrestrial dimension in the work of Kazantzakis, crowned by the paens he sang to the infinite beauty of the earth and to the human life rooted in the soil, is as intensely depicted as his momentous struggle to achieve spiritual ascent. Scattered in his writings we find innumerable passages on the fundamental importance of the material realm combined with his humanistic commitment to mankind’s terrestrial habitat to live and  “flower” in it; and his spiritual; growth, the ascent, is crucially linked with and  depends on the material base.

These passages, often a surging lyricism and ritual adoration, can provide for us today, our threatened planet, not only inspiration for ecological concern and action but also an ethical base that could strengthen the panoplies for such action. A select-  ion of the best of such passages could become an eco-pulsing gospel in our struggle for survival.

Using passages from several of his works, I will attempt to demonstrate the significance of the Kazantzakian embrace of the earth and suggest how it can inspire and  nurture committed ecological action, especially if combined with his principle of  χρέος / εύθύνη -- dutiful service / responsibility the central animating force of his ethical humanism.

Dar Jamail tells the Iraq story you won't hear
on FOX, CNN or the Networks

As the occupation of Iraq unravels, the demand for independent reporting is growing. Since 2003, unembedded journalist Dahr Jamail has filed indispensable reports from Iraq that have made him this generation's chronicler of the unfolding disaster there. In these collected dispatches, Jamail presents never-before-published details of the siege of Fallujah and examines the origins of the Iraqi insurgency.

Dahr Jamail will tell his compelling story in Fresno at 7 pm on Monday, November 12, 2007 at the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno, 2111 East Nees Aveune.  He will be discussing his book, Beyond the Green Zone:  Dispatches from an Unembedded Journalist in Iraq.

In late 2003, frustrated at the failure of the U.S. media to accurately report on the realities of the Iraq War for the Iraqi people and American soldiers, Mr. Jamail went there himself to report on what he saw.  His dispatches are widely recognized as an important media resource.  His reports now appear in the Nation, the Sunday Herald, Islam Online. the Guardian and the Asia Times, as well as on the BBC.  His reports are available online at www.dahrjamailiraq.com.

"Dahr Jamail does us a great service, by taking us past the lies of our political leaders, past the cowardice of the mainstream press, into the streets, the homes, the lives of Iraqis living under US occupation. If what he has seen could be conveyed to all Americans, this ugly war in Iraq would quickly come to an end. A superb journalist."-Howard Zinn

From Beyond the Green Zone…

We walk slowly under the scorching sun along dusty rows of humble headstones. She continues reading them aloud to me, "Old man wearing jacket with dishdasha, near industrial center. He has a key in his hand." Many of the bodies were buried before they could be identified. Tears welling up in my eyes she quietly reads, "Man wearing red track suit." She points to another row, "Three women killed in car leaving city by American missile."

This event is a must for anyone who wants a more realistic appraisal the stark realities in Iraq than Americans are getting from managed news reports and political spinning.

The event is sponsored by KFCF Radio
and
The Fresno Free College Foundation.

Tickets are $10 general and $5 for students.
